The war in Gaza caused much of the world to ask why such a thing could happen, while those who are familiar with the conflict between Israel and Palestinians know that history is everything.
In this special one-session course, we will explain the origins of the war, from the beginning of the Zionist movement in the 19th century through the establishment of Israel in 1948 and its many wars over the subsequent 75 years, and to the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7. Unlike virtually all such courses, we will present all the competing interpretations of that history, including the view that Israel has a right and duty to maintain a Jewish homeland on historic holy land and the argument that Zionism is inherently racist and Israel is a settler colony that has unjustly displaced the Palestinian people.
By the end of the course, students will understand the various points of view on the conflict and be equipped to engage in any debate on the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine.
