Neoconservatism

STREAMING VIDEO
2 Class Sessions

For some, the term “neoconservative” refers to a belligerent approach to U.S foreign policy. To others, it is the name for the people who created the Iraq War. To still others, it is a term to describe an ideological commitment to invasions, conquest, torture, and political repression. Very few have attempted to understand the historical roots and intellectual development of the most powerful political faction in the U.S. government.

In this 2-part course we examine the four generations of thinkers and political operatives known as neoconservatives: the New York intellectuals who turned against left politics in the 1960s; the “Scoop Jackson Democrats” who tried to fuse hawkish anticommunism abroad with social welfare at home; the notorious “neocons” who switched parties and rose to power in the GOP and Bush administrations in the 1990s and 2000s, and the current cohort that determines much of President Biden’s foreign policy in Ukraine and the Pacific.

Students of this course will gain not just a comprehensive understanding of the neoconservative movement, but also a deeper knowledge of US foreign policy and geopolitics during our lifetimes.
