Human Nature

The Foucault-Chomsky Debate

STREAMING VIDEO
1 Class Sessions

On October 22, 1971, at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, the French philosopher Michel Foucault and the American linguist Noam Chomsky debated the question, β€œis there such a thing as 'innate' human nature independent of our experiences and external influences?"

In this one-session course, we watch portions of the interchange between Foucault and Chomsky and examine what was the beginning of an enduring conflict between modernist and post-modernist thought.
